UGC Announces 4-Year UG Program Will Be Mandatory from 2026–27
The University Grants Commission has made the 4-year undergraduate program mandatory for all central universities from the academic year 2026-27, aligning with NEP 2020.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced that the 4-year undergraduate program (FYUP) will be mandatory for all central universities starting from the academic year 2026-27. This is a major step in implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Key Features of 4-Year UG Program - **Multiple Entry-Exit:** Students can exit after 1, 2, 3, or 4 years with corresponding certificates - **Academic Bank of Credits:** Credits can be stored and transferred across institutions - **Internship Mandatory:** 8-week industry internship in the 3rd year - **Multidisciplinary:** Students can choose minor subjects from different disciplines - **Honours Degree:** 4th year includes research project for Honours with Research
Impact on Students Students completing the 4-year program will be eligible for direct PhD admission without a Master's degree, saving 2 years.
Several universities including Delhi University, JNU, and BHU have already implemented the FYUP and provided positive feedback.
