It is a public Institute of National importance and one of the new AIIMS in India, established under Phase-V of the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY) initiative. AIIMS Bilaspur is currently operating under the mentorship of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh.
